Buckling/Plastic Collapse Behaviour and Strength of Continuous Stiffened Plates Under Combined Biaxial Thrust and Lateral Pressure

A series of elastoplastic large deflection FEM analyses is performed to identify the collapse modes and strength characteristics of continuous stiffened plates under combined biaxial thrust and lateral pressure. Stiffeners of different geometries are considered in the stiffened plate models. It was found that for small value of lateral pressure, the local panel and stiffener tend to collapse in a simply-supported mode. However, with increase in the lateral pressure, the collapse mode changes to a clamped mode. It was also observed that angle-bar stiffener has larger stiffening effect than those of flat-bar and tee-bar stiffeners having the same flexural rigidity. The applicability of the authors' formulae and also DnV formula were evaluated for the estimation of the ultimate strength of the continuous stiffened plates under combined biaxial thrust and lateral pressure. It was revealed that the authors' formulae for a continuous plate simply-supported along stiffener lines predict reasonably the ultimate strength as long as the transverse thrust is more dominant. The predicted strengths using DnV formula are over-conservative but in good correlation with FEM results.
