This report presents the active control swell-compensator which was developed for auxiliary facility of ship's research winch system in a new research ship "Hakuho-Maru". In comparison with conventional passive control compensator such as a ram-tensioner, the superiority of active control was evaluated and established with trial in actual working condition. The advantageous point of active control are not only to prevent the variation of upward and downward movement of the research object in sea (the movement of active control mode decreases approximately to one-fifth of that of no control mode), but also to reduce the fluctuation of tension in cable or wire rope. The computer simulation to predict the effect of each comparative mode, that is, active mode/passive mode/no control mode, was carried out in advance for evaluation of swell-compensator and the result was effective to evaluate the outline compensation effect.
