Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) has published the Guidelines for Direct Strength Analysis of Tanker Structures in 2001 which compile new and transparent standards for practical assessment procedures for safe design of hull structures. Based on these Guidelines, a new structural analysis system for double hull tankers was developed in April 2002 to support the direct strength assessment of primary hull structures. This paper outlines this direct strength analysis systemfor double hull tankers, which is the first software application to support a new comprehensive hull strength assessment service of ClassNK called PrimeShip-HULL. Also presented in the paper is an outline of an interface for structural data exchange between the PrimeShip-HULL and a widely-used ship CAD system, Tribon system, based on a newly defined XML format for double hull tankers. The system has practical smart functions, such as automatic identification of structural members, automatic setting of dynamic design loads, and automatic evaluation of yielding, buckling and ultimate strength in accordance with the new Guidelines. The system incorporates know-how specific to ship structural modeling and analysis. Widely used CAE software applications are used for pre- and post-processing and as the finite element solver. The analysis and evaluation procedures are navigated through within the system interactively such that a ship designer rather than a CAE expert can easily perform the structural analyses and assessment required by the Guidelines.
