This paper presents the results and findings obtained from a series of finite element (FE) analyses of double hull tankers undertaken to investigate practical procedures of ship structural analysis for the evaluation of yielding and buckling strength. Practical and effective procedures of hold structural analysis are investigated with respect to modeling extent, support conditions, and compensation of unbalanced forces based on a series of comparative structural analyses using hold structure models and entire ship models of a VLCC and an Aframax tanker with double hull construction. In this study, the stress superimposition method is applied to combine the hull girder stress with the stress obtained from the hold structural analysis.
