The standard for the exchange of product model data (STEP) has the objective of providing a neutral mechanism capable of describing product data throughout the life cycle of a product, in a form that is unambiguous and independent of any particular software and hardware platform. The first version of STEP was put into international standard ISO10303 in 1994. Development of STEP for various industries including the shipbuilding industry is underway and will soon be incorporated into ISO10303. This paper gives a general introduction to STEP followed by details of ship-related parts of STEP as well as the present activities of Nippon Kaiji Kyokai towards the development and implementation of this standard.
