Since the mid 1990s Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) has been developing a comprehensive system for ship motion and wave load analysis. This system employs the latest two-dimensional (2D) strip theory as the most practical approach for conventional ships, high-speed strip theory for fast vehicles, and the three-dimensional (3D) sink-source and Rankine source methods as the most precise and flexible approaches for arbitrary ship types. During the first stage of this development, ClassNK has developed a new analysis system for wave loads implementing the latest improvements in the strip theory. This primary part of the system has a wide variety of functions that incorporate the latest improvements of the strip method, and is practical, efficient and versatile in use. In order to validate the primary system, calculated results were compared with the experimental results of a VLCC and a Panamax containership as well as with the results calculated using other analysis programs that employ methods different from the system. A number of comparisons of ship motion, wave pressure and hull girder bending moment were made to validate the system, which show that it can be used as an efficient, powerful and practical analysis tool for conventional ship types. This paper summarizes this primary system for ship motion and wave load analysis and the results of the related verification study.
