Recently, the accuracy of sound power measurements during the actual operation of a machine in situ has been improved through the use of sound-intensity measuring technology. Although a standard measuring method is being established at the ISO, much difficulty is still encountered when measuring the sound intensity of large-scale sound sources because the measurement becomes time consuming. Although, there is a simple survey method which can be used based on sound-pressure measurements, accurate evaluation of environmental correction factors is then difficult. Given this background, this paper describes a sound power determination method for large-scale sound sources. Sound intensity measurements were carried out on several large marine diesel engines, which were installed in the ship's engine room or on a manufacturer test bed where sound conditions were far from free fields. The accuracy of the sound power evaluation performed under such conditions and the practicality of the intensity measurements are discussed through a detailed analysis of the measured data. Furthermore, a new convenient method referred to as the hybrid method, which is based on the sound-pressure method but which requires several points of intensity measurements, is proposed and its practical merits discussed.
