This paper studies frequency entrainment in externally excited phase oscillator in energy aspects. The same phenomenon occurs in overdamped pendulum, Josephson junction circuit, phase-locked loop, and simple power system. Averaged equation is derived for the rotational motion formed by the Jacobi elliptic functions. The obtained analytical result is shown to be consistent with the corresponding numerical result. Then we discuss the entrained motion and the stability, that is, frequency entrainment from a physical point of view. Frequency entrainment appears through operation of excitation to sustain the rotational motion and regulate velocity or energy balance in the phase oscillator.
