Numerous investigators have observed that food or other chemical substances given by mouth to Pavlov pouch dogs stimulate gastric secretion, but, with the exception of Ivy and Javois, they have not considered its relation to either the gastric phase or the intestinal phase. Nor has the presence or absence of vasodepressor substances been taken into consider at, on although these are known to have an influence on gastric secretion. In the present experiment, the author tried to show that certain substances which contain a definite quantity of secretagogues, when given by mouth to Pavlov pouch dogs, act on both stomach and intestine. Comparisons were also made between the effect of the unaltered substance and the vasodepressor-free substance on gastric secretion. For this purpose liver extract in quantities of either 4.2gm or 8.4gm. was dissolved in 50cc. of water and given by mouth to the experimental animal, both in its original form and after treatment with Lloyd's reagent. All of these experiments were performed during the period when neither the gastric nor the intestinal phase of gastric secretion were manifest. The conclusions derived from this experiment may be summarized as follows: The original liver extract is more effective than the vasodepressor-free substances on Pavlov pouch dogs, since the secretagogues act during the intestinal phase, as was shown in part II. Therefore, the secretagogues given by mouth act in Pavlov pouch dogs in a manner recalling the intestinal phase.
