Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) and Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) are similar in their networking environment and assumptions with the one major difference that is how end-to-end reliable communication work. In case of a Sparsely-connected network, the existence of an end-to-end path depends on mobile node density, movement dynamics etc. Moreover TCP over a series of wireless (adhoc) links yield poor performance with an increasing number of wireless hops. All these factors lead to the Asynchronous hop-by-hop communications in DTN alone or integrated with MANET in a sparsely connected Mobile Ad Hoc network.
