With the aim of studying the value of computing the number of blood-platelets in the diagnosis of puerperal fever and of investigating the possible relations between thrombosis and blood-platelets in the puerperal period experimental researches were carried out with rabbits to observe the progress of blood-platelets for ten days after deliverys. With the materials, the effect of the venom of staphilococcus, chain cocci, bacterium coli commune, bacillus typhi, etc. was investigated. The results obtained in these reaearches were as follows: 1) Rapid decrease of the number of blood-platelets is shown on the first day after delivery, and gradual increase on the following days, the maximum being shown on the fifth and sixth days. Comparatively marked decrease is seen on the seventh day and on the eighth the normal condition is regained, showing no notable changes. 2) As a result of the injection of the various venoms into the animals during four days after delivery, marked physiological changes are effected the decrease in the blood-platelets being greatly checked. 3) The effect of the venom of chain cocci is the most marked that of staphilococcus coming next. Compared with these, the action of the venom of bacterium coli commune and bacillus typhi produces no particular changes. 4) The marked decrease of blood-paltelets, therefore, in the puerperal period is of significance in the diagnosis of puerperal fever and in the prognosis. 5) Infection with chain cocci and staphilococcus results in the destruction of blood-platelets, and proves to have marked effects on thrombosis.
