Part III. The Influence of Substances Toxic to the Autonomic Nerve upon the Carbohydrates of the Skin. Rabbits were given injections of epirenamin chloride (adrenalin), pilocarpine hydrochloride, atropine sulphate and eserine salicylate subcutaneously and the change in the sugar, the glycogen and the protein sugar content of the skin was determined by the method described in the previous parts. The results were as follows: 1) No marked change of the reducing substances was noticed after the injection of 0,01 c.c. of epirenamin per 1 Kg. weight. Injections of 0.05 c.c., 0.15 c.c., 0.4 c.c. and 0.5 c.c. of epirenamin, however, caused an increase in the sugar and a decrease in the glycogen content, while injections of 0.15 c.c., 0.4c.c. and 0.5 c.c. of epirenamin resulted in an increase in the protein sugar content, and the effect on that content of a 0.05 c.c. injection of epirenamin was obscure. 2) The sugar and the glycogen content was increased after the injection of 5mg. of pilocarpine per 1Kg. weight, while the protein sugar content was slightly decreased. None of these contents, however, was changed after the injection of 3 mg. per 1 Kg. weight. 3) The injection of 10 mg. of atropine per 1 Kg. weight, led to a slight decrease in the protein sugar content, while the changes in the other contents were irregular. After the injection of 5 mg. per 1 Kg. weight there was recognized a decrease in the glycogen content, while the other contents remained nearly unchanged. 4) The injections of 0.5 mg. and 1 mg. of eserine per Kg. weight, caused an increase in the skin sugar and the protein sugar content and a decrease in the glycogen content. These changes were very marked when 1 mg. was injected. Part IV. On the Destruction of the Carbohydrates (Glycolysis) of the Skin. The author studied how much the sugar, the glycogen and the protein Sugar of excised skin diminished, when it was left standing without bacterial contamination. The examination was carried out with rabbit and cat pelts at the room temperature in May, July and October, the room temperature in Japan. being about 20℃ in the day time in May and October and 28℃ in July. The results obtained were as follows: 1) The sugar, the glycogen and the protein sugar content of an excised skin, when it was left standing, diminished gradually, independently of bacterial Contamination. 2) The average percentages of the sugar lost were 25,4% at 3 hours, 38,7%, at 6 hours and 27,1% at 24 hours in May; 26.8% at 3 hours, 37,3% at 6 hours and 39,9% at 24 hours in July; and 18.7 % at 3 hours, 31.8% at 6 hours and 44.7% at 24 hours in October, 3) The average diminution of glycogen was 15% at 3 hours, 15.5% at 6 hours and 22.1% at 24 hours in May; 1.6% at 6 hours and 35.6% at 24 hours in July; and 5.8% at 3 hours, 32.1% at 6 hours and 35.6% at 24 hours in October. In July, however, the glycogen increased by 5.6% of the original content 3 hours after the excision. 4) The average decrease in the protein sugar was 10.7% at 3 hours, 13.9% at 6 hours and 22.3% at 24 hours in May; 11.2% at 3 hours and 11.3% at 6 hours in July; and 19.6% at 3 hours, 39.6% at 6 hours and 46.7% at 24 hours in October. 5) The cat's pelt, which was excised under chloroform narcosis, showed less diminution of the reducing substances than the rabbit's pelt. There was some difference between the black parts and the white of the same cat in the content of reducing substances. Part V. On the Carbohydrates of the Hair Islands in Rabbit's skin. According to Hans Konigstein (1923), the dark spots in dark rabbits, which are visible when they are epilated, are the regions of hair growth. The skin in these parts is stained with a dark colour of varying degree and the skin itself is thicker here than in the unstained parts. White haired rabbits, however, have no such parts. Instead of them they have a localized thickening of the skin, which is called "the hair island" by the author- the region of hair growth. The author determined the content of the sugar, the glycogen and the protein sugar of the skin both in the hair island and in the other parts of white haired rabbits. The results obtained were as follows: 1) The average content of the total reducing substances in the hair island was 444 mg.% in May and 462 mg.% in October. Its ratio to that in the ordinary parts was 1.12 in May and 1.18 in October. 2) The average content of the skin sugar in this part was 123 mg.% in May and October but its ratio to the in the ordinary skin was 0.93 in May and 1.1 in October. 3) The average content of the inverted sugar from glycogen in this spot was 103 mg.% in May and 114 mg.% in October. The ratio to that in the ordinary skin was 1.52 in May and 1.44 in October. 4) The average content of the protein sugar in this part was 218 mg.% in May and 225 mg.% in October. Its ratio to that in the ordinary part was 1.1 in May and 1.13 in October. (For the details of these examinations reference should be made to the tables inserted in the original article.)
