The current state of knowledge regarding the neurobiology of suicide was reviewed. At least 3 neurobiological systems are involved in the pathophysiology of suicidal behavior. Dysfunction of the serotonergic system (trait-dependent system) and hyperactivity of the noradrenergic system and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (state-dependent systems) appear to be included. Increasing evidence points to an overlap between neurobiological and cognitive psychological approaches to understanding suicidal behavior. A better understanding of the neurobiology of suicide can help detect at risk populations and help develop better preventive interventions. Because suicide continues to be a major public health problem, further study is clearly needed, including research on the synergic effect of medical and psychosocial approaches.
