As the geography expands its scope and applies various methodology, some Japanese geographers have focused on literary works in recent years. Y. Sugiura, who had already in 1992 wrote a book on literary geography becoming the talk of the Japanese geographical circle, edited a new book in 1995 entitled Literature, Man, and Region: Geography Crossing Disciplinary Frontiers. Ten geographers including the editor contributed eight papers using literary works to this work in Japanese. After giving critical comments on these papers and making clear why this book is not quite so interesting as expected to literary men as well as to geographers, this article discusses the current trends of literary geography in Japan. In terms of the purpose of using literary works, five or six directions mentioned as follows are observed in this book and some literature concerned. 1. To use literary works as a research material in order to clarify geographical phenomena in an individual region or space. 2. To use literary works as a research material in order to clarify the people's recognition or image of an individual region, space or place. 3. To use literary works as a research material in order to investigate the spatial recognition, spatial behavior, place experience, or view of environment in general. 4. To take up literary works in order to treat geographical aspects such as space and place observed in them. In this case, literary works are a research subject rather than a means of research. 5. To take up literary works in order to treat geographical aspects of the writer such as spatial recognition and spatial behavior. 6. To use literary works as a teaching material of geography. This can be reduced to five directions mentioned above, when we think that teaching and study are two sides of the same coin. Lastly, this article points out that most of the authors of this book are indifferent to the study of other literary geographers, and encourages them to discuss with each other.
