The Omine Mts. in Yamato Province, central Japan, have been a sacred area for a Japanese mountain religion, shugendo. Laymen have known, however, their geographical features and place names as well as religious ceremonies to some extent. Geographical knowledge of the common people about the sacred mountain area is an interesting study subject. The author supposes that pictorial maps reflect geographical knowledge of the people. This paper takes up the Omine Mts. drawn on a pictorial map of Yamato Province printed in 1735 by a private publisher, and investigates the source with special reference to provincial pictorial maps by the Tokugawa Shogunate. In addition, it examines the content of three official pictorial maps, since they attract attention of some researchers recently. The findings obtained are as follows: First, the description of the Omine Mts. on a pictorial map Yamato Province in 1735 draws on the official pictorial map made in 1699. Although some researchers have argued that provincial pictorial maps printed in the first half of the eighteenth century are connected with the official pictorial map painted in the mid-seventeenth century, it does not apply to this case. Further, this opinion needs to be reexamined from all sides by comparing printed maps during that time with official maps made about 1700. Secondly, as a result of making a comparison among three official pictorial maps of Yamato Province, it made clear that the description on the map in 1699 is simpler than the map in 1648, and some placenames are added on the map about 1838. The first finding mentioned above shows an example of the social propagation of geographical knowledge about the sacred mountain from the government to the common people.
