Although students aspire to pass English courses, they neglect considering the required conditions for doing so. Establishing concrete goals for themselves in areas such as daily quizzes is almost non-existent for students studying English at Kanazawa Institute of Technology. This paper compares two sets of students, a treatment group and a control group, both of which comprised 2nd year students who studied English for three terms. The treatment group recorded high personal goals, made plans for achieving them, as well as completed questionnaires concerning goal setting for daily quizzes. This research proposes to show that as a result of goal setting, conscious planning, and reflection by students, not only did the students achieve desired scores in daily quizzes, but also surpassed them. Furthermore, goal setting raises students' consciousness to the fact that students' high expectations of themselves are relevant and attainable. Thus, they become motivated and involved in the language learning process.
