While teaching reading classes at Kanazawa Institute of Technology, the author struggled to motivate students to read before class. Precious class time was used by the teacher or the students to learn the vocabulary, instead of using time on the content or discussion. In this paper, a brief history of language teaching in Japan is given and the need for a more student-centered approach in language instruction is discussed. Next, a method called reading circles is introduced. Reading Circles are a student-centered approach to teaching reading. Subsequently, how the Reading Circles were revised in order to suit the needs of students at KIT is detailed. A survey study of learners attitudes toward Reading Circles and student-centered learning is also presented, and the results suggest that this method not only helps learners prepare better for English classes but also become more autonomous as learners. An additional benefit of Reading Circles is that they enable the teacher to gain insights into the students comprehension of the material.
