Although The Essential English Center (EEC) of Kanazawa Institute of Technology's main goals include providing students with adequate English language learning instruction, which will prepare to students to achieve a score of at least 300 on the TOEIC test, the director and faculty needed adequate means to examine the effectiveness of various aspects of its program. They desired evaluation tools and procedures to verify the extent to which goals are reached and the overall effectiveness for the program itself. Consequently, the EEC director and faculty engaged in a self-study by forming teams to carry out an ongoing program of evaluation in areas they identified. A program evaluation or self .study not only allows the director and faculty to evaluate the effectiveness of the program, but also, to make plans for further improvement and growth. One such area of self.study included the course materials for the courses English III, English IV and English V. The text used in these courses, and evaluated in this exercise is The New Interchange Book I. Teachers created the items for the questionnaires themselves and later responded to them in a survey. Also, they made suggestions which they believed would improve the effectiveness of the materials for English III to V. The data for materials survey is represented in charts which show areas of strengths and weaknesses. As a result, EEC has a wealth of data that can be considered when plans are being made towards meeting the program's goals and learner's needs.
