Changes in Somatosensory Information Input Depending on the Difficulty Level of Activities : With Special Reference to Handedness (Dominant and Non-dominant Hands)

This study was to determine "gating" effects caused by motor task-relevant modulation with dominant and non-dominant hand on somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) in eleven healthy subjects who were right-handed. All subjects performed finger- and chopstick tapping (active and passive conditions) with dominant and non-dominant hands. SEP was evoked by randomly stimulated median nerve at the wrist of each hand during rest and four movement task. N20-P30 and P20-N30 amplitude attenuated during movement tasks performed when the hand was stimulated compared with that at rest. There was a condition × task interaction at the N20-P30 amplitude during non-dominant hand movement when the hand was stimulated. Then, the N20-P30 amplitude was diminished under the active condition compared with that under the passive condition during both motor tasks. The N30 amplitude was attenuated under the active condition in comparison with that under the passive condition during the chopstick tapping task performed when the hand was stimulated. In conclusion, the findings of this study suggest that the effect of centrifugal gating differed during complex motor tasks, and there was a major effect in the non-dominant hand.
