Turbochargers have been adopted steadily and widely for diesel and gasoline engines. These turbocharged engines have a lot of advantages and variety of specifications of turbocharger has been used. Recently regulation of engine exhaust gas emission has been strengthened and NO_x and particulate matter from automotive engines must be reduced. To cope with this regulation, especially diesel engine manufacturers demand turbocharger makers far higher boost pressure than ever to supply much more air to engines and at the same time to improve combustion process. The requirements of turbocharger performance were wide operating range, high efficiency, and high specific-speed. Additionally, high pressure ratio also becomes important. To satisfy these requirements, high pressure ratio compressor having reduced impeller exit angle and increased number of impeller blades was developed. Mixed-flow turbine of small-diameter, light-weight and large swallowing-capacity was also developed. This paper describes development of compressors and turbines for high pressure ratio turbochargers.
