Recently turbochargers and turbocharging technologies have progressed significantly. There has been a lot of research into improvement of aerodynamics of compressor and turbine performance, new bearings, new materials, variable geometry systems and new control systems. This research is all very important for improving turbocharged engine performance. In addition, there is strong demand from engine manufacturers for turbochargers that are small and light-weight. In order to reduce size and weight, the use of a small-diameter, light-weight, large-swallowing-capacity turbine and compressor is most important. In addition, the use of a smaller turbine rotor would help improve turbocharger response to acceleration, and this would also have a beneficial influence on the ease of installation of turbochargers within the limited engine compartment space, on reduction of vehicle weight and on turbocharger cost. This paper describes development of small-diameter large-swallowing-capacity turbines for automotive turbochargers carried out at IHI.
