Recently turbochargers have been widely adopted for passenger cars. (1) Vehicle engines operate under a wide range of engine speed and load so that turbochargers applied to these engines must have high efficiency over a wide flow range. It is also necessary for turbochargers to be relatively light-weight in order to improve transient response and to reduce vehicle weight. This paper describes the development of a high specific speed radial-inflow turbine. In order to develop a high specific speed radial-inflow turbine, various aerodynamic analyses, performance. predictions, strength analyses and fundamental tests were carried out for impellers,_scrolls and exhaust diffusers. After these basic studies, the new impellers were fabricated and tested to evaluate their actual performance. Test results indicate that the advanced model has the flow capacity over 80 percent greater than the conventional model and the efficiency of 82 percent at a specific speed of 0.228.
