In order to clarify the internal flow characteristics of a vaneless scroll nozzle for a diagonal flow gas turbine, an experimental investigation was carried out with a variable geometry scroll which has a movable side wall. The effects of the scroll passage height and the space between the scroll tongue and the hub were examined. In particular, it was found that the secondary flow strongly affects the scroll nozzle performance and the peripheral nonuniformity of the flow is caused by the wall boundary layer accumulating between the tongue and the hub.
