Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. have been researching and developing small high-performance radial turbines for gas generator turbines since 1974, as part of the development of a two-shaft regenerative gas turbine for 400 PS trucks [1]. In our research, we made a test model of the radial inflow turbine with its turbine wheel tip diameter of 180mm, assumed its practical applications, and conducted an experimental cold-air investigation over a wide operation range of pressure ratios from 1.5 to 3.0, and theoretical velocity ratios from 0.4 to 0.9, using six nozzles and four wheels. The effects on aerodynamic performance in operating conditions and dimensions are shown in this report. The test model has a high efficiency over a range including requirements for gas generator turbines. Its maximum total efficiency at pressure ratio 2.0 is 92%, and its static efficiency 88.4%.
