A new radial turbine blade (Lean back blade) with high performance and high reliability has been developed. Its geometrical configuration features an exducer of the radial turbine blade slanted to the suction side. Motivation of this design concept was to eliminate excessive stress prevailing on the root of the blade trailing edge and to prevent secondary flow. The last mentioned two objectives were found through an analytical procedure of the vibratory blade strength and of full three-dimensional flow and a measurement of flow at the blade outlet. The experiment demonstrated that the above new type of blade is well capable of improving the radial turbine by approximate two percents in efficiency.
