Recent studies intended to empower advocates have posed a question on how to protect privacy and anonymity of consumer/survivor, who is actively committed to or involved in the professional research as research subject. I have reviewed previous literature referring to research ethics, trying to explore what kind of research technique should be applied to protect the rights of those who participate in the professional research. Recent publications increasingly underline the importance of the consumer participation, and are more likely to identify him/her as collaborator or coauthor. These publications either use the consumer's real name or maintain anonymity according to the mutual agreement. In case the consumer's real name appears in the publication, his/her job status and life security are guaranteed. None of the case studies I reviewed publicize the consumer's real name. The articles in the literature do not answer to the following questions; 1. Dose a real name guarantee the validity of the research? 2. Can publicizing a real name be legitimatised, if the case study intends to empower the advocate? 3. Can the dilemma between the validity and the privacy be solved by using a real name? These issues could be examined in a different context. More theoretical discussion will be needed on whether the professional studies should require consumer participation to further the empowerment for the advocate.
