This is a brief report on "Self-advocating", an important theme of the "Twelfth World Congress of Inclusion International", held in Netherlands in the summer of 1998. This report mentions briefly the activities of the "Inclusion International" emphasizing its differences from other international organizations. Also mentions here, is one of the sessions in the congress, "Onderling Sterk (Strong Together)", which outlined how consumers could organize themselves. Three hundred participants discussed the following themes during the two-day sessions . 1) Turning Right into Reality: How self-advocates can bring about change, 2) To Be or Not To Be: How to deal with the dilemmas of genetic information, 3) Real Work-Real Pay, 4) Hearts and Minds, 5) Making Choices, 6) The Roof Over Your Head. Through discussion, the participants recognized the each theme should be examined from the points of "Our vision-What we want", "Actions-What has to happen/change", and "Barriers-the difficulties we face". The congress concluded that self-advocacy should be composed of self-expression, and self decision, supported by the professional skills.
