The author participated in the "Psychiatric rehabilitation seminars" held consecutively in Chicago and Boston in 1997 fall. The seminars were supported by Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center attached to Boston University. In this paper, the meaning of the terms of "recovery" and "consumer/provider" is elaborated to review the usage of these terms when applied to psychiatric rehabilitation treatment in Japan. While such words as "back to society", and/or "employment" are likely to be translated as the "goal" of the rehabilitation, functioning also as a compelling force for the patients to work, the term "recovery" has been adopted to encourage patients to be independent without any outer forces. The author argues that the introduction of the word "recovery", and the more frequent use of that term will contribute to stimulating patients' positive attitudes towards independence, and will consequently make the process for the rehabilitation more effective. The author points out that in the practice of the consumer/provider in the United States, people with distinctive "self-recovery" image have been appointed to accommodate the need of patients in the rehabilitation process more effectively, arguing that Japanese easy practice of appointing people without such strict qualification as required in the US should be rectified for the benefit of the patients.
