When three-dimensional welding residual stresses are measured based on inherent strain using the Finite Element Method, too many inherent strain components in elements have to be specified to express its distribution. If these are to be determined experimentally, a large number of elastic strains must be measured. In order to obtain inherent strain distribution from a small number of measuring points, a function method is proposed. To verify the function method, residual stresses and inherent strains in bead-on-plate welds are estimated. The residual stresses estimated by inherent strain described as functions show very good accuracy compared with those computed by thermal elastic-plastic FEM.
