4. On the Local Buckling Strength of a Super Tanker : Buckling Strength of Web Plates with Cut-outs for Longitudinals

There have been arised many technical problems involved in the design of large tankers. One of such problems is concerned with the local strength, especially local buckling of web plates of transverse rings which is remarkably influenced by the existence of cut-outs for longitudinals. For theoretical investigation into buckling strength of the perforated web plates, the authors completed a computer program "SLOB" based on the finite element method using triangular finite elements and a conforming shape function. The accuracy of the solution by the program was assured in comparison with experiments conducted in this study on test models of shell structures of an oil tanker. A series of calculations was carried out on the buckling strength of the perforated web plates and also on effects of several kinds of reinforcement. The results furnished valuable informations for the design of web plates, such as design charts and approximate formulae, and clarified the effectiveness of reinforcement. Finally, actual buckling failures of a large tanker were investigated using the informations of the theoretical analyses and the result maintained that the buckling should have occured under the actual loading conditions.
