In this paper, a predicting method of welding residual stress by using the source of residual stress (inherent strain) is proposed. And the validity of the method is demonstrated by numerical experiments with the aid of the finite element method. Welding residual stress is produced as a result of thermal elasto-plastic behavior. Its source is composed of the thermal strain and/or plastic strain, etc., which is called here inherent strain. Taking a butt joint as an example, the sources of residual stress are estimated from several joints of different sizes manufactured under the same welding condition. It is found that the distributions of the source of residual stress are almost the same if the sizes of the joint are larger than that of a specific one, which is named a standard size. It is demonstrated that the residual stress produced in a joint of any size can be predicted accurately by elastic analysis using the inherent strain in the joint of standard size, unless the sizes are too small.
