The purposes the this study were to examine how each factor involving physical function of stroke patients, family caregivers, and their environmental status relates to discharge from hospitals either to home or care facilities, and to examine how each factor relates to the recognition of the appropriate time to discharge patients from hospitals to home or care facilities as well as family caregivers. The subjects are 48 sufferers from stroke who have been hospitalized and their family caregivers, and 48 patients who are scheduled to be admitted to rehabilitation facilities and 48 of their family caregivers. We evaluated the degree of independence of the subjects' daily activities. As for family caregivers, we evaluated their sense of burden concerning care-giving and the degree of their subjective satisfaction. We conducted research on the environment surrounding the caregivers and whether there was anyone to help them, their sense of economic burden, and their hobbies. As a result, there was a disparity in participation level (p<0.05) concerning the subjects' abilities for being discharged from hospitals to home and care facilities. Consequently, our research in dicates that the participation level is an index in abilities of discharging from hospital for stroke patients and it is important to find out how to support this aspect.
