Utility of the PULSES profile and Barthel index for assessing independence in activities of daily living in stroke patients who need a long-term home care was investigated. Twenty seven patients with hemiplegia following stroke were subjects. Relationship between these two scales was caliculated and analyzed severity and characteristics of thier disabilities. As a result, these two indices showed a strong negative relationship (r=-0.89, P<0.01). When the subjects were divided into 3 groups according to total scores of the Barthel index: groups with the scores under 30 points, over 60 points and between 31-59 points respectively, statistically high significance was recogonized among these three groups (P<0.01). In additions, most of the components of the Barthel index and PULSES correlated to each other (P<0.05). Upper and lower limb functions as well as excretory one were correlated with most of the components of the Barthel index in particular. These results suggest that the PULSES profile and Barthel index are helpful in understanding and measuring severity of disablement of stroke patients who need a long-term home care. In addition to this, it is also revealed that combining the Barthel with the PULSES provide expansion of subsections upper and lower limb functions as well as excretory functions of the PULSES.
