A retrospective study was carried out to identify the incidence of falling and factors associated with it by stroke patients in a rehabilitation hospital. Two hundred fifty-seven stroke patients participated in this study and were assessed whether they have experienced falling one or more times during their hospitalization. For each case, 9-item survey was chosen and differences between the fall and non-fall groups with regard to these 9 variables were analyzed statistically by using χ^2. As a result, falls occurred in 26.5% of the patients. The fall group did not differ from the non-fall group with respect to most of the 9 variables except time since onset and 2 items of self-care activities. In addition, despite a statistically significant relationship was not recognized, those who had sensory impairment showed a tendency to have falls. More interestingly, falls occur at a higher percentage in those who lacked complications such as dementia and motor ataxia. These results indicate any clinician who can be in a strategic position for the determination of risk for falling in stroke patients should behold it as symptomatic of an underlying problem and perform all-embracing assessments for understanding and addressing manifold factors that may affect it in stroke patients.
