This paper investigates issues involving gender in EFL classrooms in Japan. The purpose of this paper is to assist EFL teachers in Japan in this regard. Some researchers have suggested gender issues may not be of relevance to EFL teachers, and thus this question is explored. The following three areas relating to gender are examined to determine how they affect EFL classes in Japan : the English language, EFL materials and Japanese society. Based on the findings, some suggestions designed to aid EFL professionals in Japan in matters concerning gender are provided. These include having EFL teachers use gender-neutral models of current English, choose gender-neutral ELT materials for their classes, and to be cautious where the issue of culture is concerned.
