• Objective : We investigated whether or not the mental state affects the somatic sensory thresholds. Subjects and Methods : Thirty healthy volunteers (7 females and 23 males) participated in this study. They were selected on the basis of 10 exclusion criteria. We investigated psychiatric factors using the Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), Somato-Sensory Amplification Scale (SSAS) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). And we investigated personality using Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI). Next we conducted quantitative sensory tests on the tongue tip and dorsum of the hand. Results : There were significant differences in the thermal sensitivity thresholds for warm stimuli (TST-W) and thermal pain perception thresholds for warm stimuli (TPTh-W) between the tongue tip and dorsum of the hand. Sensitivity increased in both sites as shown by the high Harm Avoidance scores of TCI. Conclusions : We investigated the relationship between the mental state and thermal sensory thresholds in healthy adults. We found the possibility of a relationship between personality traits and thermal sensory thresholds.
