Localization of rRNA genes in Lilium by fluorescence in situ hybridization and its comparison with silver staining

We report here the variability in number of rRNA loci and activity of rRNA genes in the genus Lilium by means of comparative study on nucleolar organizing regions (NORs) detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and silver staining. The ribosomal DNA (18S-5.8S-25S rDNA) derived from wheat was hybridized to chromosomes of L. formosanum, L. longiflorum and L. ×formolongi. The FISH signals showed differences among the three species and all corresponded to the silver-bands. On the other hand, not all signals by silver staining coincided with those by FISH.
