Karyotypes of six Indian hill-stream fishes, five belonging to the Order Cypriniformes and one to the Order Siluriformes, have been described for the first time. The specimens of these fishes were collected from Kumaon and Garhwal regions of the U.P. hills in India. Cytogenetic analysis was carried out by using the usual hypotonic-acetic methanol-air drying method. The karyotypic data analyzed are as follows : Schizothorax kumaonensis (2n=98; 24m+6sm+68st), Barilius vagra (2n=50; 27m+17sm+6st), Botia lohachata (2n=98; 16m+20sm+62st), Botia dayi (2n=98), Nemacheilus rupicola (2n=50; 20m+8sm+22st) and Pseudocheneis sulcatus (2n-52; 8m+14sm+30st). Male heterogamety of XX : XY has been detected in Barilius vagra. The karyotypic data reveal that many types of chromosomal changes including polyploidy, played a role in the evolution of fish genome.
