Cytogenetic studies involving conventional Giemsa staining were performed on eight species belonging to family Belontidae (Perciformes, Pisces). Ctenops nobilis, the only species of this genus, revealed 2n=44 (8m+8sm+28a) with no morphologically distinguishable sex chromosomes. Karyotypes of seven other species belonging to genus Colisa were : 2n=46 (10m+8sm+28a) in C. chuna; 2n=48 (22m+16sm+10a) C. Labiosus; 2n=46 (46a) C. leeri; 2n=46 (46a) C. trichopterus trichopterus; 2n=46 (46a) C. t. sumatramus; 2n=48 (16m+16sm+16a) C. fasciatus, and 2n=46 (14m+6sm+26a) C. lalius. C. fasciatus revealed ZZ/ZW sex chromosome mechanism whereas in C. lalius, this mechanism was of XX/XO type. Other species of Colisa did not reveal any sex chromosomes. Both Robertsonian and non-Robertsonian changes seemed to be involved for their karyotypic evolution of the family Belontidae.
