The chromosomes of two species, Channa punctatus (Ophiocephalidae) and Labeo dero (Cyprinidae), were examined by restriction enzyme-banding obtained with HaeIII treatment. The karyotypes of these species respectively revealed diploid sets as 2n=32 (20m+12sm) and 2n=48 (12m+16sm+20st-a). It has been observed that HaeIII can cause the fish chromosomes to produce specific banding patterns similar to G-bands. The restriction enzyme banding revealed heteromorphology in one chromosome pair in the females of L. dero, pointing thus to the ZW : ZZ sex mechanism.
