• Somatic chromosomes of two Indian glassfishes belonging to family Centropomidae of the order Perciformes have been analyzed. The diploid chromosome number in Chanda nama is 48 (2 submetacentrics+46 acrocentrics) with FN=50 and in Chanda ranga is 40 (10 submetacentrics+30 acrocentrics) with FN=50. These two species are quite akin and their karyotypic evolution has probably occurred through Robertsonian changes.
