Air-dried preparations of mitotic and meiotic metaphases of Papilio demoleus Linn. (Lepidoptera, Papilionidae) showed 2n=60 and n=30, respectively. G-banded karyotypes exhibited the heteromorphic ZW pair in female and homogametic ZZ pair in male sex chromosomes. A definite centromere like constriction (primary centromere) was observed at certain stages of the mitotic cycle.
