The Effects of Oblique Discrete Rib Arrangement on Heat Transfer Performance of a Square Duct

Three-dimensional numerical simulation was conducted by making use of a RANS approach for the flow in a duct accompanying longitudinal vortices and discussions are given for the related thermal fields. In the first half of this paper, applicability of the three turbulence models adopted in the present study is discussed based on the comparison with published experimental results both for the flow around a rectangular winglet vortex generator and for the inclined impinging jets. Main part of the article treats the numerical results for the flow around a discrete rib attached obliquely to the flow direction onto the bottom wall of a square duct. The rib attack angle effect on heat transfer and pressure loss performance was investigated and the most effective angle on heat transfer augmentation appeared to be β=45 among the tested cases. Further comparison was also made with several other types of rib arrangement in order to evaluate the oblique discrete rib performance.
