Under the new Course of Study, English classes in Japanese junior high schools focus on developing communicative competence. In order to develop this competence, more phonetic guidance should be introduced into English classes. The purpose of this paper is to show some examples of phonetic guidance. To begin with, we will show the effectiveness of using hatsuonhyoki and the knowledge of phonetic changes which occur at word boundaries. Next, we will survey the students' experience of phonetic guidance by reviewing the results of a questionnaire taken in 2004 by the students of my class at Ibaraki Christian University. Then, we will consider the university students' own perceptions about phonetic guidance. Finally, we will observe examples of micro-teaching conducted by my students in an attempt to illustrate some ideal methods of phonetic guidance under the new Course of Study.
