The purpose of this study is to investigate the credits of educational psychology and adolescent psychology lectured in Japanese universities, colleges, junior colleges and professional schools as the subjects for the teaching profession, and to analyze the views on how these two subjects should be if they would attach any efficiency to educational counseling. The questionnaires were sent to 1,532 members of the Japanese association of educational psychology who graduated from university in psychology more than seven years ago and are now working in universities, junior colleges, professional schools, research institutes, children's welfare clinics, etc. We retrieved 469 questionnaires (30.6%) in March and April 1983. The following results were obtained: (1) Many lectures of educational psychology were two or four credits and many lectures of adolescent psychology were two credits. (2) (a) In educational psychology, learning is lectured by more than 90 percent of the instructors. (b) Personality, adjustment, evaluation and development of children are lectured by 70 to 80 percent of them, (c) Psychological tests, teaching, group, development of adolescents and research techniques are lectured by 50 to 60 percent of them. (d) Guidance to pupil is lectured by 44 percent of them. (e) Career guidance is lectured only by 7 percent of them. (3) (a) In adolescent psychology, significance and characteristics of adolescence is lectured by more than 90 percent of the instructors. (b) Development of personality, distress-anxiety-loneliness, sexual development, dependence-disobedience-independence, development of need and emotion, and development of body and exercise are lectured by 70 to 80 percent of them. (c) Developmental task, cognitive development, sense of values, view of life, maladjustment and development of interpersonal relations are lectured by 60 to 70 percent of them, (d) Mental hygiene is lectured by 50 percent of them. (e) Guidance to pupil is lectured by 25 percent of them. (f) Aptitude and career guidance is lectured only by 16 percent of them. (4) As the views on how educational psychology and adolescent psychology should be, 61 percent of the questionees took a view that clinical psychology and educational counseling should be enriched as elective or required subjects, while educational psychology and adolescent psychology should be unchanged. 16 percent of the questionees took a view that the contents of lectures on educational psychology and adolescent psychology should be reorganized to some extent according to the effect of this research meeting on educational counseling. 17 percent of the questionees took other views. The rest didn't answer this question.
