Since 1986 a survey of the distribution of bryophytes on the Zempukuji campus of Tokyo Woman's Christian University has been in progress. Among the 30 areas where plant habitats were scrutinized by the Suginami Ward officials, our campus was found to have a good many species of mosses and hepatics. The authors recognized that they are well distributed over the campus. There are 44 species of epigeous bryophytes (31 mosses and 13 hepatics) and 18 species of epiphytics (15 mosses and 3 hepatics). (cf. Distribution Maps I and II, and Tables 1-4.) Of the 204 arboreal species on the campus, the mosses grow over only 25 species. Among 18 epiphytic species, Cololejeunea japonica grows on the surface of trunks of 16 different species, Clastobryella kusatsuensis on 15 species of trees, Entodon challengeri, Glyphomitrium humillimum and Claopodium gracillinum on 7 species. There are 7 different species of moss which adhere only to one species of tree. (cf. Distribution Map I and Table 1.) The trees to which were adhered many species of mosses were Ginkgo biloba (12 sp. of mosses), Prunus yedoensis (7sp.) and Sophora japonica (8 sp.). (cf. Distribution Map I and Tables 1 and 2.) The variety of the species and the number of epiphytic bryophytes depend on the species and the ages of the trees and also on the nature or the state of the trunk surfaces and the environmental conditions, such as sunshine, humidity, and air. Also, observations through a microscope were done on some bryophytes.
