There are two types of image codes: those based on black and white patterns, and those based on colors. Color-based image code recognition is very difficult because the illumination, the devices, and the print materials all cause color variations. We propose a white-balance-based color classification algorithm that uses quiet zone information in the code. It can classify the various color information in the codes, due to varying illumination, devices, and print materials, to predefined color clusters, in real time. Experimental results show that this approach can achieve better classification outcomes when compared to other color-based image code recognition algorithm.
