Abstract FiVe coals were classified into two types. For Type I coal, brown and subbituminous coal, during the initial stage of liquefaction smaller benzene soluble compounds were obtained. As liquefaction proceeded, compounds having more condensed-ring were cleaved and liquefied. For Type II coal, bituminous coal, including less reactive linkages than Type I, a more condensed structure unit was postulated to be present uniformly.
