Treatment of tetramethylphthalic anhydride (I) with 28% aqueous ammonia at room temperature afforded ammonium tetramethylphthalimide (IV) and and 2-cyano-3,4,5,6-tetramethylbenzoate (V). The amount of IV increased by heating at 100 °C, tetramethylphthalimide (VI) being precipitated. A plausible reaction path is proposed.
