Three bitches in relatively advanced stages of pregnancy were kept free of helminth infections, and were inoculated in the stomach with infective ova of Toxocara canis. They gave birth to puppies 18 hours, 2.5 days and 5 days after inoculations, respectively. Puppies were examined for the worms in their bodies on succeeding days after birth. 1. No prenatal infection of the inoculated worms occurred in puppies of the bitch inoculated 18 hours before parturition. 2. The occurrence of the prenatal infection was demonstrated in puppies of the bitch inoculated 2.5 days before parturition. The inoculated worms recovered, however, were in very small numbers and in early developmental stages, being much smaller than the naturally acquired worms. 3. The inoculated worms, acquired prenatally, recovered from puppies of the bitch inoculated 5 days before parturition were in very large numbers, and in various developmental stages. The well-developed individuals of them showed the same growth as in the naturally acquired ones. In other words, it was demonstrated that the well-developed worms acquired experimentally attained nearly the maximum growth in the fetus within 5 days after the infection of the bitch. 4. Only a part of the infective larvae which invade the bitch body will migrate to the fetus, resulting in the prenatal infection. Moreover, their migration to the fetus will takes place successively.
